Makerspace

We envisioned...

a space where students could engage in hands-on making, working in ways that cross boundaries between lab and studio, while making the space itself reflective of the intent to keep nature in mind.  We retrofitted an existing 900 square foot space on the basement level of  a 19th century brick building.

The brief for the design included the following criteria:

  1. Biophilic patterns were incorporated to enhance students’ concentration, engagement, and productivity

  2. Sustainable materials were used whenever possible

  3. Materials and living elements such as native fish aquaria were chosen to encourage a sense of place

  4. Elements in the room showcase design that works with Nature’s Technologies, such as aquaponics, hydroponics, and biomaterials
